Replace your card online

If you are an adult U.S. citizen with a U.S. mailing address, are not changing your name or other information, and have a driver's license or state ID from a participating state, you can usually request a replacement through a my Social Security account. The card arrives by mail.

SSA mails the new card in about 5 to 10 business days after it completes your request. The local office cannot print a card on the spot.

Replace your card at the Springfield office

  1. Fill out Form SS-5.
  2. Gather proof of identity and, if needed, of citizenship or immigration status (checklist).
  3. Bring them to the office at 70 Bond Street or mail them, as SSA instructs.

Limits and tips

SSA allows up to three replacement cards per year and ten per lifetime, with exceptions such as legal name changes. Often you only need your number, not the card itself.
