What a representative payee does
- Receives the benefits on behalf of someone who cannot manage their own money.
- Uses the money for the person's current needs (housing, food, medical care) and saves the rest for them.
- Keeps records and reports to SSA when asked.
How to become a payee
- Contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or the Springfield office to apply.
- Expect an interview, usually in person, and identity verification.
- SSA decides whether a payee is needed and who should serve.
Rules
Payees cannot use the money for themselves or charge the beneficiary (except qualified organizational payees with SSA approval). Misuse must be reported to SSA.
